Chapter 6
I t would have been a shorter ride had we simply gone due east to Wyndych, but I needed to stop at the College first. I wanted someone to tell me what was on my arm. I also needed to tell them that Saffyra was on the way here and, more importantly, Lorcynâs manuscripts were on the way back and that they were to make sure they were secure. Why keep them there after all the trauma the College recently experienced? I still believed in the College and what it represented, and I intended to make sure it got back to what it was supposed to be, the center for learning.
However, it would have to adapt. There would be three Castes now as the Dragon-rider Caste would be eliminated. The Pens would become merely another landing field like at any other city. Despite that, I wanted to see the College grow into what it had once been, and that meant supporting and protecting it. With Keeva and Gavlyn in charge, I believed it had a chance.
Though it was late when we arrived, I was surprised and concerned there was no one at the Pens to receive us when we landed. True, I hadnât given advanced warning of our arrival, but someone should have been there just in case. Nymech noticed it too.
Where is everyone? She glanced around at the vast empty grotto. It feels so strange coming back here and it being so quiet. Iâve spent most of my life here. I guess thatâs how it feels when a child leaves home and comes back to visit. Itâs not the same anymore. I can only imagine how you feel coming back here.
It is weird, but I canât dwell on it. If I do, I get an overwhelming melancholy, wishing things were like they were before. Yet, I know that they were never like that before. I was merely ignorant of the forces pulling the College apart.
I gave her a hug then joined Taegan and Torgil to walk towards the guards who stood before the doors. One turned to me, a frown creasing his brow.
âTheyâre locked, Sire.â
âLocked?â
âYes, Sire.â He grabbed the handle and pushed to demonstrate.
âWhy would they lock the doors?â Taegan said with a frown.
I cocked my head and stared at them, trying to remember how one would lock the doors to the Pens. Then I remembered the iron hooks on the doors that could support two crossbeams. Yet I couldnât recall ever seeing a crossbeam anywhere near the doors. I now faced a dilemma. Should I use magic, assuming there were crossbeams in place, or simply blow the doors off the hinges?
Deciding itâs always safer to start with the simplest action first, I imagined lifting the crossbeams and leaning them against the walls by the doors. My first inclination was rewarded when I pushed on the doors and they opened.
âLetâs go see whatâs going on,â I said, marching forward. My guards immediately fell into step with us as
